In Memory of Kamran Katouzian: A Pioneer of Transformation in the Modern Art Movement of Iran

Kamran Katouzian, one of the most influential contemporary Iranian artists in painting, graphic design, and advertising, passed away in the final days of 1403 (2025) at the age of 85 due to illness. Katouzian was a pioneer in Iran’s contemporary visual arts, who, through his forward-thinking vision and distinctive style, succeeded in creating a new visual identity for Iranian art and advertising.

In 1965, encouraged by architect Houshang Seyhoun, he entered the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran to study architecture without taking the entrance exam. However, he left the program after two years. Prior to that, he had spent some time in the United States. Upon returning to Iran, he became acquainted with artists such as Changiz Shahvagh and Nasser Mofakham and played a role in the founding of Saba Gallery in 1964.

Impact on Graphic Design and Advertising

After his initial experiences in painting and sculpture, Katouzian turned to graphic design and commercial advertising. He first launched the avant-garde advertising agency and later established the company “Karpi” (a combination of his and his wife’s surnames: Katouzian and Radpey), paving a new path in Iranian advertising. Karpi was among the first companies to popularize the use of billboards and urban banners in Tehran, giving a modern identity to urban advertising.

Fusion of Tradition and Modernity in Art

One of the key characteristics of Katouzian’s work was the fusion of traditional Iranian elements with global modern styles. Alongside his advertising work, he created numerous paintings that ranged from abstract to pop art. His works were known for their vivid colors, innovative compositions, and inspirations drawn from Iranian culture.

Presence in International Biennials

Katouzian won first prize, along with Jazeh Tabatabai, at the 4th Tehran Biennial in 1964. He also represented Iran at the Paris Biennial (1964) and the Venice Biennale (1966), solidifying his status in the international art scene.

The Legacy of an Artist

Throughout his fruitful career in painting, graphic design, and advertising, Katouzian left behind a lasting legacy. Not only did he chart a new course in Iranian advertising, but he also inspired generations of artists with his works. He was a progressive artist whose name remains alive in Iran’s visual memory—an artist who proved that creativity is the most vital element for enduring in the history of art.
